PRACTICES FOR FOSTERING READING HABITS
Collection of Texts - 23rd November 2007

Authors: Maria José Vitorino, Paula Sequeiros, Maria José Amândio, Bruno Duarte Eiras, Henrique Barreto Nunes, Elisabete Brito, João Teixeira

Lopes, Bárbara Aibéo, Manuela Barreto Nunes, and Cristina Cruz Forte.

We are well aware of how reading skills and habits open up pathways for citizen education, for motivation towards participation in public life, for the creation of "inner worlds" which then get projected, often thanks to dispositions incorporated into emancipatory practices. We also know that readers are not blank slates or empty vessels, but rather agents capable of experimenting "textual strategies" which very much subvert the author’s intentions (whenever they

are explicitly stated). However, we cannot neglect what several studies have shown us, namely in terms of the predominant use made by students, of reading instruments (reading with a certain purpose, normally associated to curricula and to evaluation processes), in a type of rehabilitation of mandatory readings and in terms of frequency of libraries for school purposes.

EuropeaN Cultural PrOfilE FOR THE GaliciaN CITY OF Culture

The European Cultural Profile we developed for the Galicia City of Culture is the result of the intention of including in the Document of Reference a more

global dimension of the project, transversal to all cultural facilities of the City of Culture, capable of fulfilling a significant role in the construction of a Europe of the cities and regions. Before such a challenge, our work attempted to integrate fundamental European values for the construction of an artistic and cultural society which would be integrative, creative and plural, materialised into proposals for action that culminate in the re-definition of a cultural facility for the CCG - Centro de Enlace Cultural.

Araújo, Susana Lamas, and Ana Rita Rodrigues.

"Science is too important to be left in the hands of scientists", the doubts that have been raised about science call for a more attentive, critical, active approach, not in order to question the authority of scientific knowledge, but in order to frame other dimensions of our society. Whenever science gets involved in deep ethical and social issues, it is the responsibility of society as a whole, including scientists, to determine the way forward. Part of the undefined boundaries of this relationship is

communication, communicating science.

The most promising spaces for the development of new paradigms for action reside in the intersection between leisure and learning, which have brought to cultural institutions new challenges and have open up new opportunities for the development of strategies of relationships with the different audiences, rethinking and re-equating the spaces and forms for such meetings. In this area, educational services and educational projects have taken up more and more the role of communication interfaces with audiences and privileged venues

for the construction of knowledge and for establishing lasting and demanding relationships.

EXHIBITIONS. Different perspectives

Coordination: Fátima Marques Pereira
Authors: Margarida Veiga, Ana Isabel Ribeiro, Pedro Lapa, Paulo Renato Trincão, João Paulo Velez, Sérgio Mah, Ivânia Gallo, João Oliveira Rendeiro, Alexandra

Fonseca Pinho, Cristina Guerra, Pedro Oliveira, Julião Sarmento, Manuel Aires Mateus, Ana Tostões, Dario Oliveira, Mário Micaelo, Miguel Dias, José Nunes Rodrigues, Paulo Cunha and Silva, and Pedro Gadanho.

The present reflection on the territory of the "exhibition" has clearly to do with the permanent and constant mutation that goes on in contemporary societies. Presently, the approaches and understandings of the different stakeholders upon the concept of "exhibition" face the natural effervescence of the systematic transformation under which societies are, and the permanent

flow of life under continuous growth at cultural, social, political, economic and technological levels. Transmutation, transversality, merges, independence, uninterrupted curiosity by different levels of knowledge, sustain and host a "new" contextualization of the concept "exhibition".

It is our deep conviction that promoting reading habits should be taken up as a fundamental mission of all Public Libraries and School Libraries in Portugal. Only through systematic and continuous work, developed over the long run, will it be possible to make substantial changes to the present situation, characterized by low reading habits in the Portuguese population.
